My opinion on Offsite Disaster Recovery....
Why are people still using tape backups for offsite recovery? They're slow, unreliable and require a lot of management overhead. I'm guessing that people just aren't aware of their options.
Consider this: You can configure a spanky new, fully replicated 4TB Storage Area Network for less than $50k (that's two arrays, one on each side). This can be either synchronously or asynchronously replicated. With bandwidth coming down, establishing dedicated links between sites for the replication is also relatively inexpensive (I've seen dedicated fiber lines for <$1k per month for facilities within a mile of each other - talk to FiberTech in the NE US).
With automated SAN replication, you get the following
benefits:
- no longer need to deal with tapes (storing offsite, swapping,
replacing, purchasing new ones, etc...)
- improved recovery times for site level disasters
- more reliable recovery - no tapes and no shipping/handling
- less data loss - replication can be configured continuously or on
a scheduled basis (e.g. hourly).
If you add VMware or an imaging software into the mix, your site level recovery is now extremely robust. You can restore your servers and desktops (watch for post on VMware VDI) in minutes provided your networking is configured for it.
Summed up, having a tape strategy for site level recovery is like buying an insurance policy from Joe's Basement Insurance Co. ......it's not something that leaves you feeling warm & fuzzy about your chances of actually recovering from a disaster.
Given my obvious bias, I'd love to hear some comments from those that have tape strategies today and how they are making out with recovery testing.
